Again, another beautiful morning to awaken to in Costa Rica.  I forgot to mention on Sunday that our final two team members arrived safely on Sunday morning so now our team is complete.   Today is our first day of work on site.  After breakfast at  7 a.m. we were given a Bible verse to think about and 30 minutes of private devotional time.   Then we met at at the platform of this beautiful new church to get our work assignments for the day.  We have to paint steel, do rebar, work a little cement, move a bunch of dirt, and a variety of other small things as our main goal this time is to build two new columns for the church.  Everybody got busy doing what they felt they would do best on.  I helped clean and wipe down steel columns and then paint them red.  Sam worked with the dirt that was being moved.  Once it was put into a wheelbarrow it was moved over to a ditch where Sam spread it out to fill in the low spots.  When lunch time came we were more than ready for a break but it was hard for everybody to get up and back to work after eating.  We were more than ready for naps instead of work.  It’s really getting quite hot also.  I don’t know what the actual temperature is but the sun is quite hot and has moved to where we don’t have much shade in the afternoon.  Part of what was done this afternoon was to chop down two trees that would be in the way of one of the columns.  It was done by Stephen climbing up into the tree and chopping off the limbs using a machete.  Even Kay Lynn got in on part of the chopping by climbing up in the tree and swinging that big knife.  For us Texans it was hard to see those two beautiful trees full of fruit being chopped down.  One was a mango with lots of small green unripe fruit.  I thought of how much my grandson loves mangos and here is a whole tree being removed.  But, in order to build this church trees must be cut down.

A shower felt so good after the hot day.  Since we have hot water of a sort my shower alternated between warm and lukewarm.  But it was good to be clean.  There is now a new building on site very close to the Work  &  Witness dorm.  It consists of a kitchen, laundry area and a small apartment for Laura, the lady who plans and cooks nearly all our meals.  It’s not completed but is ready enough that we can store our snacks in the kitchen area and use the laundry room.  Laura still cooks at the dining area up by the church and that is where we still eat, just as we did three years ago.  But, the rest of the teams scheduled for this year will use the new kitchen for their meals.

After a great supper we stayed at the dining area.  We will be doing a VBS on Wednesday and we needed to separate out crayons into bags for all the kids.  We anticipate 200 kids and we brought enough crayons for each to have 8 different colors to take home along with a small coloring book that goes along with the Bible story we will be doing.  With so many hands helping it didn’t take long to gets those bags of crayons ready.  Then Anne taught us some little Bible songs in Spanish.  Both songs she taught have motions so it was quite funny to listen to and watch the team as they were learning.   We followed with a great devotional by Luetta and then to bed for the night.
