Sunday morning. We are not able to attend church today as it is the day we have to return to Lima. We had our usual scrambled egg/ham breakfast but this time they also added little pieces of weiners to it. I picked those out and didn’t eat them. They didn’t taste good the other day and I didn’t want to even try it today. And, of course, our crusty rolls, papaya juice and strawberry juice. All the juices are really thick and creamy. John gave a short devotional. Our bus driver was coming from Lima and was at the hotel before 8 a.m. but Jose David didn’t want to leave Pisco until 10:30. I think it had to do with the check-in time at the hotel in Lima. Pastor Luis came to the hotel to tell all of us adios. The manager of the hotel came to our breakfast table to give all of us a little gift of a special type of pastry made in the area. It was quite unexpected!
Close to 10:30 we loaded all our luggage into the bus, hugged the hotel manager and Pastor Luis and started on our way out of Pisco. We had plans to stop at another little church on the way back to Lima that Jose David wanted us to visit but the pastor of that church had notified him that she was not going to be there. He told us it was an extremely poor church and he wanted us to see it. Apparently the pastor lives on a salary of approx $35/week (US). We stopped for lunch at the same little gas station/grocery mart that we had stopped at on the way to Pisco the week before. We had the left over sandwich supplies with us so we finish off most of that. While we were eating on the outside patio we noticed a very dark skinned man standing just outside the perimeter of the eating area on the other side of some bushes. He was just staring at the table of food we had. Malia asked him if he’d like a sandwich. He said yes. All we had left was peanut butter/jelly so she fixed him a pb&j sandwich and gave that and a banana to him. He had the biggest smile on his face. His hair was in braids. He had on an old leather jacket but the leather was just in shreds. As he walked away he seemed to be limping slightly. I looked through the bushes and noticed he was barefoot. We never saw him put the food to his mouth…he just held it in his hands until he was out of sight behind some other buildings.
Right after lunch we started back on our way to Lima arriving at our hotel right at 3 p.m. We are staying in a different hotel this time as Jose David could not arrange rooms in the same hotel as before. This is called the Hotel Melodia and is right in the middle of a very busy shopping area. It is more modern and seems newer inside. Right after we were checked in we decided to do some exploring. Jose David went to his home and we walked down the street a couple of blocks and over to a big shopping mall. John was looking for a watch for himself and some jewelry for his wife. This mall was super modern and very upscale. In fact, it was a little pricey for all of us! We met Jose David and his two beautiful daughters, along with one of the regional office workers, Edwin, in the lobby of the hotel at 6 p.m. His wife was unable to join us for dinner. We walked out of the lobby and right next door to the Pizza Hut where we enjoyed pizza for supper.
After supper we went back to the hotel where Jose David presented all of us with “official” certificates from the Peru district for W&W and the Jesus Film. We then said our good-byes to everyone as Sam & I will be leaving in the morning for the rest of our trip. The Nantze’s will leave Lima Monday night for Oklahoma and the California group will leave on Tuesday morning. Jose David plans to take all of them to do a little sightseeing in Lima tomorrow but he has to get ready to leave very early Tuesday morning for a long trip into the Amazon area for a district Assembly. Officially, this Jesus Film trip is over for us and now our Vacation trip begins. See you in the morning bright and early!
