At least that is what the calendar says. It is 1:45 a.m. and we are sitting in the airport in Doha, Qatar. That’s in the Persian Gulf, on the Saudi Peninsula. We left Amarillo on Wednesday afternoon about 5 p.m. on a short flight to Dallas, Texas. After a fairly short (2 hour) layover we boarded an American Airlines plane to London, England. It was an overnight flight so we attempted to sleep some. We arrived in London at Heathrow Airport around 10:45 a.m. on Thursday, January 31. Sounds like a long flight…which it was…but the time difference is 6 hours, so according to our bodies it felt like 4:45 a.m. We had to change air terminals so loaded on a bus and rode for what seamed like several miles to get from Terminal 3 to Terminal 4, where we had to go back through security check. Then we had time to wander around a little and get some lunch. We each had a hamburger because we probably won’t get any beef for the next two weeks. Two hamburgers with fries (water to drink) cost us nearly $40 U.S. dollars! Then time to go wait for our plane. We boarded the Qatar Airlines flight about 2:30 p.m. (8:30 a.m. CST) and sat on the tarmac for over an hour. For some reason a couple of people who had already boarded decided they didn’t want to fly so they had to “off-load” them. We finally left London about 3:30 p.m. (9:30 a.m. CST but 6:30 p.m. Doha time---see why I’m confused!)
The Qatar stewardesses are like what you would see on the old Pan Am flights. All young, impeccably groomed, very slim. All with long hair pulled back into buns at the nape of the neck. They wore maroon colored suits with long sleeved jackets and skirts that went well below the knees. Each had a maroon colored stretch band around the bun and wore pill-box hat. There were several of them on the flight, being extremely helpful, helping people find their seats, passing out candies, etc. Once the flight took off they changed their maroon jackets for lightweight simple dark blue jackets which they wore serving the meals and until just before landing. Qatar Airlines was nice and they made sure we were frequently offered something to drink or eat. We tried to sleep some on this flight also but it’s hit or miss on getting much sleep. We arrived in Doha at 12:45 a.m. on Friday, Feb 1 but 3:45 p.m on Thursday, January 30 in Amarillo. So…is it daytime or nighttime? Sam says it’s nighttime….it’s dark outside!
Right now we are sitting in the waiting area in the airport in Qatar. Just enjoyed some TCBY Yogurt, but not the price, $11.50 for two yogurts. We are ready to get away from the airport prices. It is now 2:12 a.m. and our next flight leaves at 4:45 a.m. This will be the last leg of our journey to Kathmandu.
