Sunday, October 10 – Monday, October 11, 2010 – Haiti Trip

Susan writes: Well, it’s time to go home to Amarillo.   After a nice breakfast of pancakes and fresh fruit Sam, Katie, and I loaded our luggage into the car to go to the airport in Port-au-Prince.   We left the Maison at 8 a.m. with our driver and with our host, Bill, to travel the 5 or so miles to the airport.  Traffic was very light this a.m.  Close to the airport we stopped at some more roadside vendors to purchase a few souvenirs.   Even with stopping to shop we were at the airport by 9 a.m.!   Bill was sending three of us home and picking up three more who were coming in on an 8:30 a.m. flight.   Sister Marie and Dr. Denise had already left early this a.m.   We had to fight off the airport porters who swarmed around pushing and trying to grab our suitcases so they could say they had helped us and demand a tip.  We met a group of yellow shirted Baptist Haiti Disaster Relief Team men from Oklahoma who had been helping with water wells and recovery.  They were on their way home after two weeks in the country.  After a fairly short wait in a very modern departure terminal we boarded our flight to Miami.   Arriving in Miami after the two and one half hour flight we went through passport control, luggage pickup, customs, luggage recheck, and back through security in just one hour’s time!  Now, to wait 5 hours for our next flight in what seemed like a very cold airport!!!  Guess we’ve already acclimated to the hot temps!  It seemed so cold to us that Katie bought a sweatshirt and warm socks in an airport store, I put on a light sweater, and Sam changed out of shorts into long pants!   Our next flight left Miami about 8:30 p.m. to Dallas/Ft. Worth.  Arriving there at 10:45 we found ourselves wandering inside the security part of the terminal trying to find some place to sleep for the night.  Not knowing for sure what terminal we were to leave from on Monday morning we stayed in the same one we arrived in.  We finally decided we’d try to get comfortable sleeping on the uncomfortable seats with armrests when a cleaning person came by and told us about some easy chairs several gates away.  We headed there to find several others waiting overnight for early morning flights.  We moved six chairs around to make little “beds” and slept fairly well for a few hours.

Up at 4 a.m. on Monday to find our flight in a different terminal.  We left DFW at 6:30 a.m. and made it back to 50 degree Amarillo at 7:45 a.m.   Ahhhh….nice to be home! Thanks for ‘traveling’ with us. We may be adding a few more pictures in the next couple of days, so check back.
